What’s Digging Up Your Lawn?

We have received many complaints over the last few months from frustrated Association members regarding skunks, racoons, and crows tearing up lawns and making a mess of properties in Stonebridge. Unfortunately, it is an Ottawa wide problem and the City of Ottawa only offers a few sanctioned options to deal with this problem.

Nutri-Lawn’s website is worth a visit as it explains about white grubs, their life span, and some solutions that follow the City’s guidelines on what can and cannot be used for lawn maintenance and care. The link below offers some valuable information.

http://www.nutrilawn.com/Your-Lawn/white-grubs/661.html

The City has suggested using Nematodes to deal with this problem. Please note that they will not work if it’s less than 10 degrees outside (i.e. during the fall months). Other communities, such as Manotick, have been successful in killing off these white grubs using Nematodes.

As quoted on the Ottawa Carleton Wildlife Centre’s website:

  • Under the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act it is ILLEGAL TO TRAP AND RELOCATE ANY WILD ANIMAL BEYOND CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE POINT OF CAPTURE, which of course makes trapping quite pointless.
  • Even if you could take the animal away, it simply would open up a space for another animal to move in and utilize the resources. Instead, figure out what is attracting the animal and remove the appeal.
  • Babies left to die in inaccessible places in your attic, or under your step/shed, will result in bad smells and a lot of money for expensive repair jobs for homeowners
  • You or your neighbours could be left with the unpleasant decision of whether to care for these baby animals or have them put down
  • A barricaded animal can cause a lot of damage trying to get back in to their young, or in trying to escape.

You can visit their website at http://www.wildlifeinfo.ca/conflicts.html

Unfortunately, as your Association, there is little we can do to help except to inform members of our findings, in the hope that it will assist in dealing with the problem.
